A lawn scarifier is a gardening tool that is used to remove dead matter such as fallen leaves, dead roots, moss and weeds from your lawn. It works like a rake but is far more efficient. A lawn rake scarifier has a set of vertical blades that goes through and between grass to remove unwanted materials, without hurting or damaging the grass blades. There are many types of lawn scarifiers in the market today. Examples are the push type lawn scarifier, electric lawn scarifier, lawn scarifier aerator and the petrol powered lawn scarifier.
You lawn overtime will have a buildup of dead matter called thatch that will usually stay on top of the grass. Thatch is not entirely harmful and it can even be beneficial if allowed to accumulate up to a certain height. Thatch can improve the integrity of your lawn. However, if its height goes beyond 1 centimeter, it can start to cause problems in your yard. A tall thatch will block nutrients and water from seeping into the ground, in the process starving the grass. In addition, thatch can be a breeding ground for pests and destructive pathogens. It is thus necessary that you remove your lawn of thatch from time to time and one of the most effective ways of doing this is to use a lawn scarifier.
When buying a lawn scarifier, consider the size of your lawn and budget. If you own a small garden, it is recommended that you get a manual push type lawn scarifier. This type of lawn scarifier is relatively inexpensive and you only need to push it around your lawn for thatch to be removed. On the other hand if you have a medium-sized lawn then you would be better off using an electric lawn scarifier. This type of lawn scarifier can do the job faster and is more efficient than manual models.
For large jobs or for big lawns, it is recommended that you get a petrol powered lawn scarifier. Admittedly, they are not cheap but they can do the job for you quickly. They would also not have bothersome cables in them nor would you have problems with battery breakdowns unlike electric lawn scarifiers.
When clearing your lawn of thatch, it is advisable that you use your lawn scarifier during Spring or early Autumn, since during these periods your lawn would have healthy enough outgrowth and can quickly recover from a bout of lawn “scarring.”
