Lawn Sweeper

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

Cleaning up leaves on the lawn can be annoying, especially when you’re using a regular rake that forces you to twist and turn every minute. Thanks to human innovation, you now have a choice: the lawn sweeper (a.k.a. leaf sweeper) or the leaf blower. What’s the difference between these two machines? First is the method by which they clean your yard. A lawn sweeper or leaf sweeper acts like a vacuum. It operates through a rotating brush mechanism that collects leaves and debris that will eventually end up in a collection bag or hopper. A leaf blower, on the other hand, blows leaves and debris into a pile that the gardener or homeowner will have to collect or burn. Same difference? Not really.

First, the lawn sweeper takes the whole leaf collection process in a single step, whereas a leaf blower only gathers the leaves, leaving the collection to the gardener. This advantage of the lawn sweeper makes it a more convenient tool to use, especially for lawns that do not require a lot of maintenance work. The only downside to the leaf sweeper is that it’s quite difficult to maneuver into cranny and crooked areas of the yard. Otherwise, it’s the most ergonomic garden tool to use.

A lawn sweeper (leaf sweeper) can be manually operated, gas or electricity powered, or towed. A manual lawn sweeper is more known as a push lawn or leaf sweeper. It’s similar to a manual lawn mower and is maneuvered by hand. It transfers hand power from the wheels to the brush, causing rotation that allows the collection of leaves. A powered leaf sweeper has a motor run by gasoline or electricity. This type is usually a little bigger than the manual version. A towed lawn sweeper, on the other hand, is attached to the rear of a vehicle like a lawn tractor or an ATV. This sweeper is larger than the first two types and can cover bigger lawns and areas.

Another advantage of using a lawn sweeper is that it can also be used in covered pathways, patios, and driveways. Some models even have attached shredders that automatically shred all the leaves and grass collected, turning them into mulch. Just be careful not to use the shredder for other debris such as stones or grit unless you want your lawn sweeper broken after your first use.

So, if you want to cut back on the time and energy you spend collecting leaves, use a lawn sweeper. It works 10 times faster than a rake and collects leaves more efficiently than the leaf blower. It can even be used on the driveway.
