No one wants to feel ill and having stomach pain is just about the worst. But stomach pain can be caused by many things from indigestion to menstrual discomfort, ulcers to just over doing the crunches at the gym. It seems that what many people call stomach pain is not really within the stomach itself but in the general area of the abdominal cavity. Whatever it is giving you stomach pain you need not grab a bottle of artificial chemicals to alleviate the pain. And better yet, you may have a remedy right in your herb garden, spice rack or refrigerator. With that in mind let us go over the many things that can cause stomach pain and the natural ways to ease the discomfort.
Flatulence- Gas pain can be in the stomach or the intestines. Either way it is painful. An infusion or tincture of Dill is good to treat this as it helps prevent gas from starting.
Ulcers- Over indulgence in spicy foods had always been the supposed culprit for ulcers in the stomach but more often than not stress is truly the problem. For the prevention of ulcers Chamomile and papaya have been shown to have some effect. In the treatment of ulcers Chamomile again and licorice helps. Taking soothing teas whenever stress is at its height will help stop ulcers before they start. Try Valerian, Bee Balm, Yarrow and Catnip to help relax.
Urinary tract infection- For the prevention of Urinary tract infections cranberry and cinnamon have proven unbeatable. Eaten fresh or made into sauce cranberries are great for keeping this awful problem at bay. Cinnamon can be made into a tea. To treat use barberry, cinnamon, dill and garlic.
Yeast infections- Abdominal pain can occur with yeast infections. Using barberry, chamomile, cinnamon, dandelion, Echinacea, garlic and goldenseal in teas or tincture may help.
Intestinal viruses- These cause severe pain in many ways, diarrhea, vomiting and stomach cramps but all these things can be helped with Dill, Bee Balm, Echinacea, Cinnamon, Ginger, Ginseng and St. John’s wort.
Digestive aid- To help prevent indigestion before it even starts there are many things you can try. Any of these can be made into a tea or infusion and taken up to three cups a day. See which one works best for you. They are allspice, angelica, anise, balm, caraway, catnip, chamomile, cinnamon, clove, cocoa, comfrey, coriander, dandelion, dill, fennel, feverfew, gentian, ginger, goldenseal, hop, marjoram, Marsh Mallow, mint, oregano, papaya, passionflower, pennyroyal, red pepper, rosemary, sage, savory, slippery elm, thyme, turmeric and yarrow.
Constipation- Horrible to have but it is easy to get rid of the pain associated with it once you take any of the following. Apple, buckthorn, cascara sagrada, psyllium, rhubarb, senna and vervain. Apples and rhubarb can be eaten as is or in a pie or crumble dessert. The others can be made into teas or tinctures.
Menstrual discomfort- To ease the smooth uterine muscles an infusion of any of these will help lessen the pain. Anise, black cohosh, black haw, fennel, fenugreek, red clover, feverfew and yarrow.
Food poisoning treatment- You may have just had food that didn’t agree with you but it could also have been food poisoning. Either way try any of these in a tea or tincture. Angelica, apple, barberry, bayberry, burdock, catnip, chamomile, cinnamon, clove, dill, Echinacea, garlic, ginseng, goldenseal, meadowsweet, mint or mullein.
Diarrhea- This can cause severe pain. Make an infusion using any of the following to ease the discomfort. Apple, barberry, bayberry, blackberry, dill, goldenseal, meadowsweet, mullein, psyllium, raspberry, rhubarb and uva ursi.
Everything from nausea, indigestion, gas, bloating and menstrual pain can be eased naturally. It’s finding the perfect herb and getting it growing in your garden that makes it more convenient for regular use. Some experimentation needs to take place to find the most effective one for you but once that is done you won’t need anything artificial and that’s a good thing.
