Did you know that the ancient city of Volubilis in Morocco was named after the Latin name of oleander and that it got its name because of its resemblance to the olive 'olea' - even if they are unrelated? Interesting as its history may be, it is far more remarkable that Oleander plants for sale abound in horticultural stores and online. Its stunning blooms make Oleander an ideal decorative bush, tree or hedge. In fact, the snowy white; fiery red; and tender pink floral splendors of Oleanders are a beloved sight in Galveston, Texas and graciously line the highways of California.
Oleander Cultivation and Propagation
Oleander or the 'sea rose' as it is also known, is an evergreen shrub that if left untrimmed grows to a height ranging from 4 to 5 meters to become a small tree. Oleander cultivation is a breezy gardening activity that is truly relaxing. The shrub is naturally hardy and requires low maintenance - it tolerates drought, negative temperature, and salt water; and survives without water for weeks. Because of its sturdy and aggressive roots, it is best to grow it far from your house or any structure in your garden dwelling. Moreover, do not be tentative about the sites where you want the Oleander to grow because the only way to remove it after a few years of growth is to literally destroy it. Oleanders make useful and lovely hedgerows or a screen to separate your area from that of the neighbors and to camouflage unsightly spots in your garden.
While it is possible to propagate Oleander from seed, it is easier to propagate it from cuttings from its shrub- preferably in the month of September. It is best that the cuttings come from the hard wood or the tips, which should then be placed in water or dipped in rooting powder. When the roots have appeared in about 2 weeks, temporarily plant the cuttings in compost and plant these in the desired permanent location in your garden the following spring. Pruning is a must for Oleanders as the healthy ones just seem to flower endlessly. Oleander is poisonous and should therefore be planted away from areas frequented by children and animals. It grows well in areas with sub-tropical climate.
