Outdoor Garden Design

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

One of the best things for the enthusiastic gardener is to be able to enjoy a wonderful well-planned garden that he/she has created from scratch. In order to do this, it is necessary to have a good working knowledge of outdoor garden design, in order to balance out elements in the garden to achieve that perfect balance between all elements. It is that perfect balance which indicates that a garden has been "professionally" made.

Outdoor garden design needs to take into account all the elements that make up a garden. Every single element in the garden, from the type of fence or wall surrounding the garden, to the kind of paving, to the plants, trees and shrubs that will make up the planting scheme, to the more functional elements such as pools, seats and playsets for children, needs to be taken into account when planning a garden that will not only be functional but of great beauty as well.

One of the basic elements of outdoor garden design is the planting scheme. By making sure that the plants you choose for your garden are native to your area, that they are there for a good reason (say, it’s gorgeous flowers, or its fall colors, or even as a screen) and that they all make sense together, you will have solved a big part of the design process. In order to do this successfully, visit your local garden center, talk to neighbors and ask about the best plants for the area.

Other items to take into account are ornamental features like water fountains or ponds, sculptures and structural elements like trellises and pergolas. As regards ponds, they do not have to be big to prove a dramatic addition to the garden. Even a small pond will soon take on a life of its own, when it starts attracting birds and beneficial insects, as well as other types of wildlife. If it is bigger and deeper, you can even include other plants, like water lilies, which are also of great beauty. Sculptures need to integrate to the plants to cause a greater impression. It is very pleasant to discover a sculpture among the bushes or shrubs, which is why they must be pruned and kept a good size if a sculpture is added to the design. Other outdoor garden design elements are pergolas, or supportive structures for climbing plants, which can also create stunning effects when covered by the right plants.

Outdoor garden design is fun to do, and everybody can do it. You do not really need to know how to draw, or how to use a complicated software program to be able to do it. You just have to try to think about the final result you want to achieve, and to take all aspects of the garden into account before doing any actual work. This ensures there will be no need to stop work during the project to change the direction of the design, and, if the need to make changes arises, it will be met quickly and you will be prepared for it. Give outdoor garden design a try before starting your garden, and you will be pleasantly surprised by the results you can get!
