Let’s face it, you spend a great deal of time lovingly tending your garden; yet as night falls, nobody can enjoy all your hard work – unless you have outdoor garden lights. There are many ways to light your garden; depending on what you want to use your garden for in the evening and your budget.
Uses of Outdoor Garden Lights
Decide what you want your outdoor lighting to do for your garden. Light for working by, such as near the barbecue, needs to be reasonably bright; spotlights attached to the shed or walls may be the solution. Choose white lights as they are more flattering to people’s faces and your guests will thank you for it. Accent lighting, strategically placed can illuminate a beautiful specimen plant. Task lighting is useful; showing you the way to the back door, lighting up paths, sheds, garages. Security lighting can deter potential burglars; with lights coming on as they approach the house.
Types of Garden Lights
Security lighting is more complex than other lighting; working on a timer, or light sensitive, coming on as night falls. Remote outdoor lights need additional cabling running across the garden. Make sure that any cables are well buried and that they work on their own circuit; protected by an RCD (a residual current device) and controlled with an isolating switch. A very cost effective method of lighting your garden is solar powered lighting and nowadays there are many different solar outdoor garden lights. Powered by sunlight during the day; this is stored in the lights battery and reacting to a dusk sensor, switches on as it gets dark. A large number of solar lights are now equipped with LED light technology; this is unbreakable, gives more light and gives approximately 100,000 hours of illumination. This is truly green energy and adds beauty to any garden. There are solar lights for your walls some shaped like old style carriage lights, others sleek and modern; the style is your choice. Path lights are simply pushed into the ground and can become a feature; lighting the way without being intrusive. If you are holding parties in your garden then consider solar powered fairy lights, white or colored, strung in the trees they can add a really festive touch to the garden. There are special deck lights that can be set into your decking making it safe at night, and adding a decorative effect. Consider your garden as you would do a room; lighting it for tasks and accentuating its good features, and enjoy its extended use.
