Pineapple Fruit Tree

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

The pineapple fruit tree is not really a tree. The pineapple is the fruit of a plant that grows in the ground. It is originally from Brazil and Paraguay, and from there it spread to all areas of warm climate.

The pineapple fruit tree (pineapple plant) is an extremely decorative plant which belongs to the family of the bromeliads. It has got many pointed leaves with serrated edges, with tinges of pink and green and ivory. This is one of the reasons why the pineapple fruit tree (pineapple plant) can make such a good ornamental plant. It is also easy to keep as a plant. Read on to find out about its requirements.

Since the pineapple fruit tree (pineapple plant) comes from tropical regions, its main requirement is a warm climate. It thrives at a temperature of between 65 and 75° F, so in winter it is necessary to keep it indoors. It can be taken out to the garden in the summer months, once all danger of frost has passed. Make sure that when you do so, you do not expose it to the direct sun right away. Leave it in the shade, outside, so that it can get used to the new position. In this way you will avoid burn-spots, which, although not life-threatening, can ruin the appearance of the plant. When it is indoors, it requires at least 6 hours a day of natural light. You must be careful to place the pineapple fruit tree (pineapple plant) near a sunny window, but steps must be taken to prevent it from being hit by direct sun rays, which can also ruin your plant.

They do not require much watering but, like all bromeliads, pineapple fruit trees (pineapple plants) need to absorb humidity from the air. Spraying it with water every now and then will ensure it gets the water it needs directly from the air. You will notice that water collects at the point where the leaves meet at the center of the plant. This is perfect, and if you do not see any water there, it is advisable to fill those spots with water too. Remember not to over water the roots. The soil must not be soggy, but moist.

You will also need to fertilize your pineapple fruit tree (pineapple plant) once a month, especially in the period when it is producing the fruit. You can either incorporate a general fertilizer into the soil, or use a foliar spray to apply the fertilizer directly to the leaves. You need to keep an eye out for possible pests, but the pineapple fruit tree (pineapple plant) is quite sturdy in this respect.

With time, the pineapple fruit tree (pineapple plant) will produce a purple flower, which will turn into a nice pineapple. It might be small compared to the pineapples you can buy at the supermarket, but it will be just as tasty! If you want a plant that can serve both as a beautiful decorative plant, and which will also produce edible fruit, the pineapple fruit tree (pineapple plant) can turn out to be just what you are looking for!
