One of the gardening trends that are gaining in popularity is to created color themed gardens and landscapes. It involves selecting a variety of plants and shrubs that all bloom in shades of the same color. Ground covers can be the most difficult plants to find that bloom in vivid colors. The following types of pink ground cover represent a range of sizes and hues that will provide the finishing touches to your pink garden.
Pink Creeping Phlox is a brightly flowered, ground hugging, fast spreading pink ground cover. It grows to a height of 4-6 and thrives in full sun to part shade. This hardy perennial produces bright green speared foliage and deep pink blooms in early to mid spring. It does especially well in rock gardens or tumbling over a low wall or edging. Creeping Phlox is hardy, pest and disease resistant, and thrives in poor soil. If you cut the plants back after flowering, it will promote dense, vigorous growth.
Grecian Windflowers, or Anemones, are a naturalizing perennial that presents a showy carpet of blooms in spring and early summer. They are available in a variety of colors to include a bright pink. Their star shaped blossoms grow 6 12 tall and show to the best advantage when planted in large quantities. Picture this pink ground cover planted in full sun to part shade on slopes and under taller plants and shrubs. The Grecian Windflower prefers sandy, well-drained soil.
One of the most dramatic pink ground covers is blanket roses. The Baby Blanket rose is a vigorous growing low shrub. At 2-3 in height and a horizontal growth pattern, it is among the tallest of the ground covers. It produces dark green foliage and light pink blooms. It flowers repeatedly throughout the summer months and produces a light fragrance throughout. It is fairly pest and disease resistant, especially for a rose bush. This spreading shrub prefers full sun and well-drained soil. These delicate blooms look wonderful cascading down hilly terrain or overhanging a retaining wall.
If you are looking to plant a pink-themed garden, you will need ground cover to pull the whole plan together. Ground covers are perfect for covering hard to plant areas and pulling the various components of your garden into a whole, harmonious plan. Whether its dramatic, sprawling pink rose bushes, or tiny creeping phlox, pink ground cover will add drama and continuity to your pink garden.
