Planting Miniature Roses

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

When it comes to abundant color and sweet fragrance roses are hands down the most rewarding. Miniature roses deliver as beautifully as the larger varieties. Miniature is a relative term that you will want defined before you start planting miniature roses. Tiny as they may be the planting miniature roses are not as limited as it may seem like it would be. Once established these diminutive color spots can be enjoyed with very little time devoted to them.

Like all roses the miniature varieties come in almost every color imaginable. They also bloom from spring to fall when pruned correctly. When looking for a hardy plant that will deliver long lasting interest to a flower bed border, pot or window sill miniature roses are a good selection if you can provide the two ingredients all roses require – sunlight and water.

While miniature means small a gardener will what to take the time to find out the mature size of the miniature rose being considered. Smaller than standard rose varieties miniature roses can grow as high as four feet tall. This could be problematic in a window greenhouse environment! When planting miniature roses indoors micro-mini roses are the most suitable ones to consider. The term micro-mini usually means the plant will only grow to about five inches tall which fit much better in most indoor settings.

Details For Planting Miniature Roses

The options for planting miniature roses are greater than those for their full sized cousins. You can grow miniature roses in eight to ten inch pots, in hanging baskets or in the ground and they will do well if supplied the water and sun they need. Planting miniature roses in the right sized container is critical. If the pot is too small or too large the rose will not grow well. Repotting will need to be done as the bush grows until it reaches the varieties mature size. Wide gaps between leaves or a wide spread in the branches indicates that more sun is needed. Moving the plant or providing additional light will correct the issue. Planting miniature roses indoors will also require misting regularly to provide the plant with enough water to stay healthy. Planting miniature roses in hanging baskets is easy. Check the soil daily and maintain a moist environment for the roots. Positioning the baskets so they receive at least six hours of full sunlight as the seasons change is the key to continuously blooming baskets.

When planting miniature roses directly in to the ground make sure to place it where it is not overshadowed by trees, walls, fences, buildings or other structures. Dig a hole twelve inches in diameter and deep enough to have all the roots beneath the soil line. Untangling the roots, positioning the bush and refilling the hole without compacting the ground to tightly allows the plant to breathe and absorb water easily. Water thoroughly and keep the soil moist.

Planting miniature roses is quick and easy. Don’t let their small size keep you from adding them to your landscape indoors or out. Plant well and enjoy!
