Plants for a Night Garden

   (Read 50+ times)
By Agnes Farside

No one can dispute the loveliness of flowers and plants during the day, however there are some plants that show their true beauty at night. A garden that has night blooming plants emitting their intoxicating fragrances is sure to be a pleasure to any evening guest. A night garden full of night blooming flowers is ideal for a peaceful walk, or romantic stroll with a loved one, especially when a person can look overhead and observe the constellations or shooting stars. August, an excellent month for watching the heavens for shooting stars, is also the month when most night blooming plants are at their color and fragrance peak.

Sometimes night gardens are best observed at sundown when a person can watch the beauty of flowers beginning to open such as the evening primrose. Light colored flowers of white and yellow illuminate the evening as they reflect the moon’s light. Low-density landscape lighting and bubbling fountains also add their calming affects to the tranquil setting of a night garden.

Some plants that many gardeners feel a night garden cannot be without are:

-The angel’s trumpet with its huge white blossoms that open in the evening is an excellent annual plant choice.
-The moonflower vine, another annual that also blooms in the evening, is very attractive to hummingbirds and moths.
-White roses that are perennial shrubs show up well in the darkness of the night.
-Japanese iris is a perennial that resembles a huge white butterfly.

Some flowers do not only help to illuminate a night garden but also add supreme fragrance to the night air such as:

-The sweet alyssum with its white color is not only good for illumination in a night garden, but also increases its fragrance at night.
-Evening primrose is a biennial with flowers that open in the evening expelling a strong fragrant.
-Light colored annual petunias add a mild fragrance to a night garden as well as some illumination.
-Night phlox is one of the best flowers for adding fragrance to a night garden. It is an annual with white flowers that show up well in the dark.

When having an evening outdoor garden party, put paper luminaries (white paper bags filled with kitty litter and a tea candle around your garden. This creates a romantic and tranquil look to your already established evening plants.

Nothing makes a gardener fell more content than sitting in their garden while day meets night enjoying the beauty and smells of the plants around them.
