Popular Rhododendrons For Your Garden

   (Read 250+ times)
By Graham Thrope

Evergreen shrubs are the focal point of a garden at any time of the year. Their lush foliage stays throughout to give us viewing pleasure even when the flowers of our perennials and annuals start to fade off in the winter. However, you don’t have to make a choice between foliage and flowers. You can have the best of both if you plant some attractive “flowering evergreen” shrubs in your garden. In this article I introduce you to my favorite flowering evergreen – Rhododendron.

The Elegant Flowering Evergreen

Any lover of evergreen shrubs would be devoted to Rhododendrons. The simple fact that these evergreens give off the most beautiful flowers and have eye-catching broad green foliage is enough a reason to get them into your garden. There are some very beautiful hybrids of Rhododendrons available in the nurseries that have added features such as: pest resistance, increased blooms, compact size, better sun resistance and hardiness. All the more reasons to add a few Rhododendrons to your green land.

I have listed below some very elegant Rhododendrons hybrids that you can consider for your landscape.

Cunningham’s White – If you love clear white flowers then this is an ideal choice for you. The foliage on this evergreen is dark green, it is un-blemished and has a smooth texture. It gives off beautiful light pink buds that blossom into large white flowers with a yellow tint in the center. It grows reliably and thrives well in conditions of full sun or partial shade. If allowed to grow into full maturity, this evergreen can reach up to a height of 15 feet.

Dora Amateis – If you are looking for a “compact version” then this hybrid should fit your bill. It is a low growing hybrid with thick and bushy foliage. Another interesting feature of this hybrid is that its dark green foliage takes on a bronze hue in winter. The flowers grow in trusses. Small white flowers tinted with yellow-green spots highlight the beauty of this evergreen. It’s a popular choice in most landscapes and has won the “Rhododendron of the year” award in 2004. Definitely an excellent choice for small hedges and for foundation planting.

Nova Zembla – This hybrid grows in an upright-rounded fashion. Ideal for specimen or companion planting. In fact, Nova Zembla is the standard “red” rhododendron in New England. The flowers are striking red in color, presenting a spectacular sight when they are in full bloom. The foliage is dark green in color and contrasts beautifully with the red flowers. It has a growth of up to 6 feet and hence is well-suited for any midsize garden or even a small patio garden.

There are several other hybrids of Rhododendron which you can consider. “Lorna”, “Roseum Pink” and “Olga Mezitt” are other interesting Rhododendron hybrids that are ideal for any landscape. So don’t restrict yourself to plain evergreens when you can go in for beautiful flowering ones.
