Power Rakes For Lawns

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

Power rakes for lawns allows you to clear outgrowth and debris in your garden. Similar to a lawn mower, a power rake is gas-powered and has blades that rotate very quickly. Power rakes for lawns however have a more specialized function in that they are designed to remove thatch in gardens. Thatch is a compounded organic material composed of grass clippings, leaves and roots that have accumulated on the dirt underneath the grass in yards. If thatch becomes too thick (more than ½ inch) it can prevent fertilizer, air, water and other nutrients from reaching the root. A thin layer of thatch can be scraped off manually, but thick ones can only be thoroughly removed by using a lawn power rake. Most people conduct power raking every two to five years. Because of this, many individuals would rather rent than buy a power rake. When renting a power rake, look for a reputable power rake rental store. To make sure that you would be able to get your hands on a rake, consider renting one not during the weekends or peak seasons (early spring and fall) as these are the times when most people schedule their thatching. Also before power raking, consider preparing your lawn. Remove obstructions such as pine cones, rocks or toys. You can also mow or cut the grass shorter to make thatching easier.

Ask the store staff on how to correctly set the blade width of the power rake. For this purpose, you need to provide him details about the grass in your lawn so that he can come up with the best estimate. It would also be helpful to ask for some tips or advice on how to correctly operate the rake. Since power rakes for lawns are heavy and are known to weigh twice as much as lawn mowers, you might need an extra hand when loading or unloading one. It is best to conduct thatching when the ground is dry. However, good power rakes for lawns can still remove thatches even if your lawn is wet. Thatching should not be performed when the ground in your yard is soft or mushy.

If you want to own a power rake, consider getting a second hand rather than a brand new one, since the latter can be cost prohibitive. You can find many used power rake for sale ads in newspapers, online sites and magazines. When renting or buying a power rakes for lawns, consider getting one made by reputable garden equipment manufacturers such as Bluebird and Arnold Universal.
