Pull Behind Garden Tiller

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

When I was a kid, every spring dad would have us out in the garden working the soil prior to planting his vegetable garden. Basically, this involved using hoes and rakes to chop, mix, turn, and smooth the soil. Dad generally planted a 1 – 1 ˝ acre vegetable garden, so this meant committing hours and hours of hot, sweaty work before we even started planting. We were so excited when he got a push roto-tiller! Well, modern technology has improved the process even further. The pull behind garden tiller does all the hard work for you nowadays. It has a variety of features and benefits that make the monetary investment well worth while. And, there are a number of brands to choose from in a range of prices that will fit most budgets.

Pull behind garden tillers are machines with rotating tines that can churn through compacted soil, breaking it up and aerating for easy planting. They are designed to hitch onto and be pulled by a garden tractor, lawn mower or ATV. They have their own engine, independent of the hauler, and start with an electric ignition or a pull starter (similar to many push mowers). Most have adjustable depth levers so you can break up the surface dirt with your first pass, then set the times lower for a deeper cut.

The pull behind garden tiller has numerous benefits when compared to the walk behind tillers. Walk behind tillers require you to help the machine push through the soil. They are slow, heavy and difficult to maneuver. With the pull behind tiller, the hauler does all the heavy work. Whether you use a riding mower, tractor, or ATV, it does all the pushing, pulling and turning. This allows the engine of the tiller to concentrate on breaking up the soil into a loose mix, ideal for planting. Plus, it gets the job done in about half the time of a walk behind tiller.

There are many different brands of pull behind garden tillers. Many are marketed as an accessory or option to a standard riding mower. John Deere and Craftsman are two of the most popular brands of garden tillers designed to be used with a specific brand of lawn tractors. Caution – these brands have a hitch mechanism specific to their garden tractors. If you attempt to use a different hauler you will have to modify the hitch for compatibility. You can also purchase multi-purpose pull behind tillers that can be used with a variety of haulers to include ATVs. Two of the more versatile all purpose tiller brands are the Roto-Hog™ Power Tiller and the Agri-Fab Universal Tow Behind Tiller. Both of these brands have a universal pin hitch that can be used with all types of haulers.

A pull behind garden tiller is a useful tool for the gardening enthusiast. It will power through acres of soil in a short time and leave you with a loose mix ideal for planting. Prices range from $1000 to $4000 depending on size. If you are planting a large vegetable garden, putting in a lawn, or turning compost into your beds, a pull behind garden tiller will save you time, money, and sore muscles. If that doesn’t appeal to you, I have an old hoe that I’ll sell you.
