Red Robin Shrub

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

The Red Robin shrub is fast-growing and is known to produce striking red foliage. They however can easily spread into areas in your garden where they should not be. In such cases, it is recommended that you prune them down hard. They are okay to plant in areas with concrete pathways or hard surfaces since their roots are not known to be invasive. In spring, this shrub will have beautiful flowers that are white. Large shrubs that do not receive regular pruning are the ones that typically produce flowers regularly.

The Red Robin shrub will grow well in most soil types except the heavy clay ones. You need to grow this shrub in either partial shade or in full sun exposure. It is not advisable to put them in areas where they would be in the direct path of incoming strong winds as they are known to easily suffer from wind scorch damage. The best time to plant the Red Robin shrub is in spring when the soil temperature is generally higher. Before transplanting the shrub though, it is recommended that you water it generously the evening prior. This shrub may also respond well if fertilized properly and adequately. For this purpose it is recommended that you use a slow release fertilizer that contains vital nutrients such as nitrogen, potash, phosphate and trace elements.

It is not recommended that you grow the Red Robin shrub along with equally fast growing plants since they may likely compete with the former for nutrients. Instead, choose ornamental grasses and herbaceous plants. Examples of plants that you can grow alongside this shrub are Stipapinnata, Zebra Grass (Miscanthus Sinensis Zebrinus) and herbaceous perennials (Geums, Lupins, Phlox Scabious, and Rudbeckia species).

Pruning is ideally done during summer (April or May) to stimulate the growth of new shoots. During winter on the other hand the older leaves of a Red Robin shrub might turn brown, black or have black spots. There is really nothing you can do much about this since it is the shrub’s natural reaction to the cold weather. There are some gardeners though who swear by cutting the old shoots in summer to prevent the darkening or browning of leaves in winter.

The Red Robin shrub does not generally suffer from a lot of health issues or problems. On the other hand, the Black Vine Weevil, which is a nocturnal bug, is known to have a taste for the shrub.
