Styling Your Garden

   (Read 500+ times)
By Katie Saxon

In these modern times, many of us don’t have enough time to spend working on the garden. There’s a real art to creating the perfect garden and for the uninitiated it’s a daunting task. But anyone can still create a stylish garden with a few shortcuts.

Grass or Paving Stones?

A lawn creates a beautiful luscious look to your garden, but it can be difficult to maintain. Don’t do away with the grass altogether, but if you have a patio area or pathways you’ll keep down the area that needs mowing.

Admittedly if you don’t already have paved areas, this will require hard work (or professional gardeners), but once it’s sorted your garden will be easier to manage.

Plants

Let’s face it, if you don’t know your conifers from your crocuses, picking plants isn’t going to be the easiest task. But, if you know a little about interior styling, you can apply some of what you know to your garden design.

In a living room, you would pick your colour scheme and choose your furniture and accessories to fit that theme. Do the same with plants. Pick your colours and choose plants that match.

Another interiors trick that you can draw on is the use of texture. In the same way that you might mix put cushions in a variety of textures together, choose plants of different heights and with different characteristics.

The simplest and quickest way to add plants to your garden is by placing a number of potted plants on your paved spaces. Buy them from a well regarded local nursery, ideally one that uses organic gardening methods.

Check what care the plants need before you buy, and if they need more TLC than you can give, don’t buy them. They won’t look their best without your care anyway.

Furniture and Accessories

You have your beautiful array of flowers and shrubs and your neat lawn, now it’s time for the finishing touches. Most of us will want a space to sit and enjoy our garden, so choose garden furniture that suits your style.

Some furniture – for example teak – will need more maintenance than others, synthetic materials are generally easier to maintain. But don’t count on it – do some research if you’re worried.

Now take a long hard look at your garden and decide if it needs a little something more – it may be some form of outdoor lighting, or a statue. Keep any of these accessories to a minimum, you don’t just want to clutter your garden with junk.

Styling a garden can be hard work, but it doesn’t have to be. If you do want anything more challenging or elaborate, you might want to hire a landscaping and garden designer to help. We won’t tell anyone.
