Tomato Trellis Designs

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

Trellising is a technique that can be used to maximize space when planting specific plant varieties such as tomatoes. In a number of tomato trellis designs, fruits can be grown vertically and above the ground, which is particularly helpful if you own a small plot or lot. You can also produce better quality fruits in elevated trellises since its design effectively deters and repels destructive ground dwelling pests and insects. Using trellises in growing tomatoes would ensure maximum growth of fruits and efficient use of space. If you wish to build a gardening structure of this kind to grow tomatoes, you can search gardening magazines and weekend farmer Websites for tomato trellis designs and tomato trellis ideas.

The tomato cage is the most common among all tomato trellis designs. Many gardeners when making or choosing tomato trellis plans, end up with the tomato cage design. This type of tomato trellis has large openings which can be quite useful when harvesting fruits. When building a tomato cage, it is recommended that you sink in two or three wooden stakes inside the cage for reinforcement. These wooden pieces would make your trellis steady and stable even if your tomato plants produce a good number of fruits. In making the circular cage itself, one of the best materials that you can use is a concrete reinforcement wire mesh that measures six by five inches. A variant to the tomato cage trellis is the wooden box cage type, which to its core shares the same design concept with the former. Should you choose this design, be sure to use wood that is not treated with harsh chemicals.

If you want simplicity, consider building a basic stake, which among tomato trellis designs is one of the easiest to make. You can make a wooden tomato trellis using the basic stake design. With stakes, you need to secure the main vines of the tomato to the stakes using a soft but thick twine that is tied in a lose knot to prevent the stems from getting damaged. The ideal height for this type of trellis is 6 inches. Also, the recommended diameter of each stake should be 2 inches. If you are going to use just one stake for your tomatoes, you need to prune the plants to make them into one whole vine. You would also need to remove the suckers that grow between the main stem and the leaf stems.
