Tomatoes Care

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

Setting out into the garden to pick a few tomatoes for a summer salad has always been a dream for the aficionado gardener. The good news is that almost anyone can make this dream come true, as long as he/she learns a bit about tomatoes care and needs.

The first thing you should take into account is that the tomato plant is an annual plant that can sometimes be cultivated as a biannual one. This means to say that in general, the plants will die after the first season and you will have to do everything again from scratch the following year. Tomato plants are not perennial.

Tomato plants are original from the warm climates of South America. It is for this reason that if you do not live in a warm climate it will be impossible for you to grow tomatoes outside. However, there is always the possibility of growing them indoors, with excellent results. Therefore, the main thing you must ensure to provide tomatoes care is a warm climate without risks of frost.

If you live in a warm climate then, you should acquire the seeds or plants and plant them on rich soil with a good quantity of organic material, in the full sun. Once the plants grow, and the fruit is starting to form, they will need frequent fertilizing to make sure they produce many tomatoes of excellent quality. Another important aspect of tomatoes care is watering. The soil must be moist, but never soaking wet, since tomatoes are prone to suffering from rot and other diseases brought on by humidity. To avoid any of these, also make sure you do not water your plants at night, so that they do not stay wet for many hours. Do it in the morning so that the sun gets rid of the moisture for you. Also, do not water the leaves and stems, for this very same reason.

Another good point to make about tomatoes care is pruning. You will need to prune your plants by getting rid of lateral branches in order to maximize yield. Tomato plants must also be tutored. If left to lie on the ground, tomatoes will come into contact with the humid soil and rot.

One more thing you will have to take into account for proper tomatoes care is pest control. Unfortunately, tomato plants are prone to aphids, rot, mildew and many other problems. If anything happens in this respect, it is of utmost importance to treat the plants as soon as possible, or you run the risk of losing your crop. Try to avoid using chemical fertilizers, because the idea is to be able to eat the tomatoes. Talk to an expert to see what they recommend in your particular case.

Providing the right tomatoes’ care is not very difficult once you know the basics. Sun, a warm climate, adequate watering, fertilizing and good pest control will allow you to enjoy and relish that summer tomato salad with all your might.
