If you are thinking of starting your own tomato garden, you need to know that there are many different tomatoes types to choose from, depending on your personal taste, the location where you are going to plant your tomatoes, the space you have available for them and the climate, among other things.
The first type I would like to mention is the common variety of tomatoes, also known as globe tomatoes. These tomatoes types are characterized by their hardiness, great yield and are popular because of the fact that they are quite precocious, and are the first to bear fruit. Among this type of tomatoes we can find popular varieties like “Moneymaker’s”, which bears mid-sized fruit, with a delicate taste. Another popular variety is “Alicia Craig”. This variety has become popular for its intense flavor and because of the fact that it matures earlier than other varieties.
Then there are Hybrid tomatoes types. These plants are the result of crossing different varieties, and as a result are plants that produce a large quantity of tomatoes and are very resistant to disease. The most common varieties in this group are “Eurocross”, with big red fruit and very resistant to a variety of diseases. Another variety within this group is “Herald”, a hybrid chosen for its flavor and resistance to blight.
Other tomatoes types include the Beef variety. These are big fleshy tomatoes, extremely popular for their taste and hardiness. Among this type, the varieties “Big Boy” and “Dombito” stand out for their enormous size and good resistance to illnesses.
As opposed to these varieties, there are tomatoes types that are small. These are cherry tomatoes, which are ideal if you do not have a big garden. They require the same care that their larger counterparts, but are small in size and, depending on the variety you choose, yield an incredible amount of fruit. The pear shaped tomatoes are also a good choice if you are looking for a smaller plant, since they are very tasty and resistant, but do not require the amount of space larger varieties need.
Other tomatoes types are those that grow in bunches. These are also extremely decorative, since the fruit cascades in branches, with anywhere from 6 to 12 tomatoes each. The fruit is generally a deep red color and they have a rich flavor which makes them ideal for salads.
Although there are many tomatoes types, and an incredible amount of varieties within each type, all tomatoes share the same properties. They are good sources of vitamins and nutrients like potassium and magnesium, is a good ally if you are trying to lose weight because of its diuretic properties, and has lycopene, which gives it its characteristic red color, and which, studies have shown, reduces the risk of heart attack, among other things. So, if you would like to have your own tomato garden, think carefully about he alternatives presented here, choose the one that you like the best and get ready to enjoy harvesting your own home-grown tomatoes!
