If you have always wanted to have your own tree garden, and you now find you have some room for it, you will need to have certain supplies at hand when deciding to plant your trees. No matter what trees you choose for your garden, the tree planting supplies you are likely to use will be the same. Read on to find out more.
In the first place, you will need to have the actual trees. When you decide on what trees to plant you should consider many factors, such as how much the tree will grow or what kind of shade it will give. If possible, find out about its root system: are its roots superficial (these tend to cause damage to patios and other tiled surfaces) or deep? Does the tree lose its leaves in the fall? Are you willing to work harder in the fall picking up those leaves? Once you have made a decision based on the answers to the questions above, it is time to get ready to plant!
The trees should not be bought a lot of time before the planting, since they will most likely suffer (more water evaporation, exposed roots). Have them delivered just one or two days before you plan to work. After that, make sure you have a nice shovel, which will take care of most of the work. If you find the soil is too hard (which can happen if it has not been tilled in a long time), a good tip is to water it some hours prior to digging, so that it gets softer and more manageable. Other tree planting supplies you are likely to need are a small hoe, with which you will scrape the earth around the roots of the new tree so that they roots can reach out and grow quickly once underground, and sturdy garden gloves. Dig a hole of an adequate size, according to the size of the tree, then add in some rich soil and a bit of organic fertilizer, and place your tree there. See if you like the way it looks, or if you would prefer to turn it around a bit. When you are satisfied, pile the earth into the hole again, pat it down and water your tree.
Once it is planted and watered, you will need a pair of shears to get rid of any dead branches or dead wood. This should be a small clipping, so as not to shock the tree. Pruning it lightly will assure all the tree’s energy is directed at developing a better root system. As you can see, tree planting supplies are not many, nor are they very difficult to find nor awkward to use. If you are planning to plant trees in a bigger area than the average garden, and would like to have them in a special arrangement (in neat rows, for example), you will need more sophisticated tools, measuring devices, a compass probably, but that is beyond the scope of this article.
The tree planting supplies you need are probably in your garden shed right now. Find a nice, shady tree and start planting!
