Tropical Garden Design

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

If there’s something about tropical garden design that makes it exceptional, it’s the mood that it conjures. Tropical gardens are renowned for the serenity and relaxation they create. These lifestyle characteristics make tropical gardens one of the most requested landscape designs out there. However, the trick of creating one involves the proper balance between elements that are deemed central to tropical garden design. These elements include, space, color, focal point, and culture.

Space is an element in tropical garden design that should be maximized. Every time one enters a tropical garden, there should be that instant feeling of retreat that is roused. This feeling can be summoned with the proper manipulation of space so that every pathway leads to a feature that is both interesting and relaxing. You can choose to create a pond, a hut, or a pavilion to achieve this goal. For smaller spaces, a relaxing environment can be accomplished by putting plants with big leaves close to each other, mimicking a lush-looking little forest.

Color in tropical garden design is achieved by the proper selection of flora. Tropical gardens are known to be home to dramatic, lush, fiery, and emotion-evoking plants. These are where extremely structural shapes, and big, bold, and daringly sensual foliages and flowers come into view. Intensely-colored plants are a central feature of tropical garden design. The following are the favorite trees of a lot of designers: citrus trees, ylang-ylang, Fiscus benjamina, palm trees, Plumeria, rubber tree, and olive tree. The most recommended shrubs for tropical garden design are the following: Santan, Gardenia, Jasmine, Hibiscus, Oleander, Bougainvillea, Yucca, Jade vine, and Mauna Loa. Flowers, the most wonderful flora a tropical garden could have, do not always need to be as exotic as high-maintenance orchids. The following can be used: desert rose, lily, begonias, African violets, petunias, salvia, and the bird of paradise. Some varieties of ferns, duranta, cucharita, and forebolus on the other hand, can be excellent ground covers for tropical garden design.

The focal point of a tropical garden design need not be a humongous Asian sculpture or statue. It should be something relaxing and comforting. What most designers advise is a water feature like a small pond or a structure like a hut or a pavilion. These places that can bring owners to meditate and revive their tired souls are exceptional focal points of tropical garden design.

Cultural elements can be used as accessories in tropical garden design. Small Indonesian or Thai figurines and sculptures can be placed in nondescript places to tie the place together. These art forms need not be too large. They should be inconspicuous and subtle enough to avoid them from overwhelming the space.

Remember that tropical garden design is mainly for areas that are humid, warm, and sunny. Plants are chosen because of their drought-resistant characteristics and features and accessories are meant to give the space a cool and more relaxed character, giving the homeowner a space to rest and enjoy a hot summer day.
