Vegetable Garden Pest Control

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

Vegetable gardens are handy, valuable, and practical for every household. However, nothing is more devastating than seeing creepy critters and vicious vermin annihilate rows of cabbages, radishes, and tomatoes in a matter of days. There is no universal formula for vegetable garden pest control. The solutions always vary according to the type of pest and the severity of the infestation on the crops. The most common pests that swarm gardens are the aphids, borers, worms, snails and slugs, maggots, and thrips.

Aphids are the most common critters. They cluster on plant buds and growth tips and secrete sticky liquids that suffocate the plants and prevent them from getting the nutrients they need. The easiest vegetable garden pest control for aphids is drenching with water. Other growers opt for solutions like spraying with insecticidal soap or neem oil. When the infestation is severe, a recommended vegetable garden pest control method is the use of aphid contact poisons which are usually done with the assistance of a professional.

Worms, on the other hand, attack all known plants in gardens. There are different types of worms that attack each vegetable but the damages they leave are the most depressing. Holes on leaves, eaten vegetable insides, and wilted plants can be avoided by taking time each day to pick worms and spraying plants with neem oil or organic insecticides. Another effective vegetable garden pest control method is the use of transplants and barriers. Planting transplants made from cardboard or roofing paper inside cabbage collars can help prevent the spread of cutworms.

Borers are insects that bore into plants and wilt growth tips or the entire plant. The most organic vegetable garden pest control method for borers is cutting it or removing the entire affected plant. Snails and slugs leave irregular holes in plant leaves and stems. Along the many garden pest control methods, the most convenient is removing plant debris that becomes their hiding place during the day. Owners can also place shallow cans and pans that attract these insects and eventually drown them.

The recommended vegetable garden pest control for thrips is drenching with strong jets of water with a hose. Thrips leave irregular marks on leaves and feed on almost all types of vegetables. They can even transmit plant diseases and distort leaf tips. When other methods are not enough, one can always use organic pesticides such as Bacillus thuringiensis. Maggots, on the other hand, can be controlled by putting plastic or paper shields around the seedlings. Crop rotation is also a good vegetable garden pest control method that owners can practice and not spend a lot of money on.

There are different types of insects that garden growers need to worry about but knowing the correct vegetable garden pest control treatment for each vermin can reduce resorting to expensive pest control professionals. Organic and commercial vegetable garden pest control methods are available but gardeners need to remember that studying the condition of their gardens is the first step of every method.
