This year hundreds of people are planting a vegetable garden for the first time. They may be motivated by the desire to provide healthful and organic meals to their families or they may just be trying to stretch their food dollar. Whatever the reason, there is a crowd of amateur gardeners about to plant their first crops. If you are among this group, save yourself some time and effort by purchasing a good set of basic gardening tools.
Vegetable Garden Tools - Hand Tools
First select your hand tools. You will need a shovel for turning over sod and establishing your vegetable beds, a sturdy spade for working the soil, a garden rake (not a leaf rake) to smooth your vegetable beds, a hand trowel for digging small holes and setting plants, and small hand held pruners for cutting back plants and removing dead branches. Although you don’t need to spend a ton of money, you should buy the best set you can afford because they will last longer and be more comfortable to use.
Vegetable Garden Tools - Large Tools
Next you’ll need some items that you do not use to directly work the soil, but that make the job of working the soil easier. Purchase a sturdy wheelbarrow that you can use to easily transport tools, plants, and yard waste. Buy a rubber or vinyl garden hose that is long enough to reach from your water source to the farthest point of your garden. Plastic hoses are available and are cheaper, but they do not last as long and are not as flexible and easy to use. Purchase stakes and string to use to as guides for laying out straight rows of plants.
Vegetable Garden Tools - Safety and Comfort
Finally, you’ll want to add some safety and comfort items to make your gardening experience a pleasant one. Find a good quality set of gardening gloves. They should be properly sized for your hand and be made of breathable cotton material. If your garden location is in full sun, stock up on sun protection to include shade hats and sun block. You should also consider purchasing a set of kneeling pads. They are relatively inexpensive and cushion your knees from hard soil and hidden stones.
These items are all you need to get started. You can look at gardening as a tiresome chore or as a pleasant and relaxing hobby. The right set of garden tools will go a long way toward making the experience a positive one. If you decide to continue gardening, you will be able to add some of the other fancy gardening gadgets that are available such as tillers and composters. For now, good luck and have fun gardening.
