Vegetable Trellis

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

A trellis is a structure designed to support plants. There are several types of trellises for different plant varieties and for varying growing requirements. This article is the first of a series on plant trellises. A vegetable trellis would be ideal if you plan to grow vegetables in a small area. Aside from its primary function, a vegetable trellis can also be used to cover unsightly or unappealing areas in your garden such as compost heaps or trash bins.

There are three basic types of vegetable trellis. One is the flat vegetable trellis. You would find that most green bean trellis and bean trellis designs possess this structure. In addition, a flat overhanging structure is an ideal trellis for peas. What makes this type of vegetable trellis desirable is it is thick and sturdy and can support various types of plants and vegetables. You can also easily make a small or big one depending on your preference. Keep in mind that if you plan to use a pole bean trellis, it should be tall, since this plant can grow up to 15 feet in height. You can choose a variety of materials when making this type of trellis such as metal, plastic and wood, depending on the type of vegetable you are planning to grow.

Another type of vegetable trellis is the three dimensional structure. It is also known as the obelisk trellis. This type of trellis requires a large amount of space and is widely used in landscaping. This design allows you to plant three different vegetables simultaneously, one on each side of the structure. When using or making this type of trellis, it is recommended that you incorporate a cradle for each fruit or vegetable. This is done so that climbing plants can support big fruits. A squash trellis for example when built with a sling or cradle can handle large fruits. Typical materials that are used for three dimensional trellises are wood and metal.

The third type of vegetable trellis is the planter box type. This is recommended for people who would like to grow vegetables but do not have a large area. It can be placed in different areas of your home such as the patio, deck or windows. However there are only a limited number of vegetables varieties that you can plant using this trellis design. A planter box type trellis is ideal for plants that do not grow very tall and have a short root system.
