Growing Grapes, Vitis labrusca
Modern growing methods have developed grape varieties that produce larger, sweeter, and disease resistant plants.
Best grapes for planting
If you want a fast return on your grape gardening effort, begin with bunch grapes. This type is the first to bud, flower and ripen into sweet, nutritious grapes. Ranging in colors from purple to green, the fruit is sweet, thin skinned and great for healthy snacking. Large grape clusters can be harvested from June through July.
Plant the grapes in an open area where an arbor or trellis fits comfortably. Use the thick, lush growth to screen out a less than desirable view while providing fresh from the vine fruit during blistering summers.
Bunch grapes grow best with a soil pH between 6.0 and 8.0. This range will provide maximum growth and harvest for the growing grapes. If the soil where the fruit is grown is quite fertile, applying fertilizer may not be necessary.
5 tips for growing grapes
1. Plant the grape vines from December through February.
2. A trellis or arbor must be used when planting begins.
3. Space grapes apart between 7 and 9 feet.
4. String supporting wires between posts.
5. Wire heights should be strung between 2 ˝ and 5 ˝ feet.
Support for grape vines are an important growing tool success for the fruit.
Care and Feeding
Begin by teaching each grape vine to climb up a five-foot stake. Remove any growth with the exception of the single shoots, and assist the vine to grow along the wires in both directions. In about two years the vines typically fill in between wires. If all goes well, you can expect a small crop in two years and be harvesting large crops between the third and forth years.
Water the grape vines every other day when they are first planted. Once the roots have established themselves, watering every 4 days should be sufficient. Add mulch to maintain moisture and discourage weeds from developing. When harvest time approaches, go back to a frequent watering routine.
Vine Maintenance
With proper care and attention your grape vines will grow in abundance supplying you with fresh from the vine grapes. Or you may choose to make wine or jams and jellies with select varieties. For more research on growing grapes you may want to follow the links below.
