When Is The Best Time To Plant Roses?

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

A rose garden in full bloom is probably one of the most spectacular sights any garden could have. Roses are always great favorites, not only because of their color, but also because of their fragrance, variety and versatility. To be able to enjoy this wonderful sight, it is imperative that you get the answer to the following question: When is the best time to plant roses? Read on, if you want to learn the answer!

So, when is the best time to plant roses? It depends! If you live in a warm region and you are planning to plant bare-root roses which you can get in specialized stores, the best time to plant is late winter, since you will be sure that the temperature will not drop to freezing overnight. In colder areas, however, the planting of bare-root roses should take place later, in the early spring, and once all danger of frost has passed. The reason for this is that bare-root roses have an exposed root system, which can get easily damaged by the cold. If, on the other hand, you would prefer to plant roses that have been grown in containers, then you can plant them in the summer, when garden centers and supermarkets are full of colorful and attractive rose bushes of every size and color.

Whether you go for one or the other option, it is important to bear in mind that not only the question “When is the best time to plant roses?” is important, but also the one that deals with how to plant roses correctly. In order to ensure a healthy specimen, you must bear certain things in mind. In the first place, roses require space, especially the bigger varieties like grandifloras and hybrid tea roses. If you are planting either, make sure to leave ample separation between it and any other rose bush or garden plant. Roses need good air circulation and space to flourish. Also make sure you amend the soil in which you will plant the rose bush with organic material, which will not only feed the plant but also help make the soil a bit more acid, which roses love.

You should also prune the bush immediately after planting, making sure you remove dead branches, or the ones that are too lanky or do not give the plant a good shape. Water well after this, and keep an eye on the water for the first week, especially in the summer. Remember it is better if you water your roses in depth once than if you water them slightly many times.

When is the best time to plant roses depends, then, on the type of plant you will plant and on the climate in your area. If in doubt, check with your local garden center, where you will receive lots of information that has been tried and tested by people in your own region. Roses are excellent plants, and they reward your efforts throughout the summer, yielding beautiful flowers for many months. Plant them at the right time to ensure success!
