When To Plant Strawberries

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

Strawberries, whose scientific name is Fragaria vesca, are always a delicious treat on a hot summer day. If those strawberries have been harvested from your own garden, then you are sure to feel extremely satisfied. You will have that feeling that tells you that all your hard work has finally been rewarded. However, it is really important to know exactly when to plant strawberries in order to reduce the possibility of failure and ensure success.

The best time of year to plant strawberries is definitely early in the spring. Although strawberries are quite resistant to the cold, too much of it can cause quite a lot of damage in the early stages of the plant. If the weather in your region is warmer, you can try planting them in late winter, but only with the intention of getting strawberries in increments and not all together at the same time. You can plant with a difference of a couple of weeks, so that you get that constant production later on in the summer.

Once you have decided when to plant strawberries, it is important to look at the question of how to plant them. There is a secret to planting strawberries in such a way that the fruit will not get ruined. Ensure at the time of planting that the fruit, which forms at the end of long stems that bend over with the weight of the fruit, does not touch the ground. In order to achieve this, you need to get hold of a plastic sheet, cover with it the place where you are going to plant, make a hole in the places where the plants will go, and then carefully plant.

Apart from knowing when to plant strawberries and how to plant them, you need to take care of all their needs in order to get a good crop. Make sure you fertilize the plants at least every fifteen days during the time when they are growing the most. Also remember to give them plenty of water. Strawberries like water but do not resist flooding. If you are constantly flooding the roots, the plant can develop root rot and die. It is therefore very important to water the plants adequately. You should limit pruning to a minimum. Just make sure you remove any yellow leaves that you can see.

You have now learned when to plant strawberries, where and how to do it too. Now it is time to see when to harvest them! The ideal moment is as soon as they turn red. Do not let them get too ripe on the plant because birds will destroy them. Remove them as you need them, as well, because they do not last long in the fridge. And if you find that you have had a very good crop and have more strawberries than you could eat in a week, then consider making jam out of them. The jam is delicious, and it will help you use the fruit efficiently. Get ready to enjoy strawberries next summer!
