Where Can I Buy A Mikado Plant

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

You may be asking yourself “Where can I buy a Mikado Plant?”, or you may be asking “What is a Mikado plant?” Well, let’s take a look at this most unique and unusual plant and where you can get one from for as low as $5.99.

The rare Mikado Plant is an unusual and beautiful plant, which creates a rosette of foliage. Long and turgid stems grow from the plant and bear one yellow-gold button blossom.
. It’s actually quite an unusual looking plant and its flowers resemble straws that open spontaneously. When the flowers close, they look like tight, elongated spheres on top of very thin, grassy stems.

Origins

The Mikado plant is a wetland plant. It’s native to Brasil, Santa Catarina and likes to be kept moist. The Mikado is from the Eriocaulaceae family and it’s latin name is Syngonanthus chrysanthus.

Mikado Plant Care

The Mikado plant’s origin is as a swamp plant. As a result, the Mikado craves humidity. However, there must be a balance because it can receive too much humidity. A good idea is to spray on a regular basis with filtered water. An ideal location for the Mikado plant would be a sunny bathroom. The soil should be well drained, but kept moist at all times. Very much an indoor plant, it should be grown in a bright, indirect light window. Keep evenly moist and provide humidity.
It is important to note that the Mikado plant grows best in under sub-tropical circumstances. Maintain a growing temperature of about 19-22°C and a relative air humidity of at least 70%. Keeping the pot moist continuously is critical for a healthy and consistent growth. If the plant is subjected to a drier environment over an extended period of time, it will stop growing and will begin to die.

By putting the plant in a tall vase or a shallow bowl with regular water spraying, you assist with maintaining the humidity level. It is best to water from the bottom of the pot instead of watering from the top. Be careful to not allow the soil to become dry. Remember, a warm bathroom with natural light is probably the best place to keep your Mikado. Now that you know how to take care of the Mikado, let’s address the question of “Where can I buy a Mikado Plant?”

Where Can I Buy a Mikado Plant?

The best place to begin to look for the Mikado Plant is your local tropical nursery. If the nursery does not have the plant in stock, ask them if they can place a special order. Another good place to find the Mikado plant is at your local IKEA store. They sometimes carry this rare plant in their nursery department for as little as $5.99. I suggest calling first; so, you don’t waste a trip to the store. Whole Foods has been known to carry them in the springtime as well. Again, give them a call first. Lastly, but definitely not least, shopping online is a useful and convenient option because you are not bound by the limitations of a local merchant and you can purchase from the comfort of your home. You literally have the whole world at your shopping fingertips. Hopefully, you no longer need to ask “Where can I buy a Mikado plant?” However, you should maybe ask yourself, “Can I properly care for a Mikado plant?” These plants are very delicate tropical plants that need special TLC and an experienced green thumb to thrive in most non-tropical climates.
