What is an automatic lawn mower?
Your standard lawn mower, electrical or petrol powered is pushed or ridden across the lawn to cut the grass. An automatic lawn mower is an autonomous robot used to cut lawn grass. To make them work, you use a border wire around the lawn, defining the area to be mowed. The robot uses this wire as its guide to mow your lawn and is capable of cutting up to 2 acres of grass. Your job is to set up the border wire, programme the robot, sit back, relax!
Types of automatic lawn mower
Husqvarna made the first robotic mowers available in shops in the 1990’s. They introduced the first solar powered mower; nowadays there is a model of Husqvarna automatic lawn mower for most lawn types. The automatic lawn mower you choose will depend on a number of factors; size of lawn; power source; blades and cutting height; programmability and cost.
Lawns vary; these mowers can manage lawns from 2,700 2 feet up to 2 acres. They have an incline capability up to 35 degrees for sloping lawns. Solar powered hybrid mowers use solar power and batteries; on average they cut for 40 minutes, recharge for 40 minutes but solar panels increase their cutting time by 50%. You choose between lithium or lead acid batteries which affect cutting and recharging time. The cutting height varies from 0.8 inches to 3.15 inches with up to 3 blades for heavy duty work. Some automatic lawn mowers have programmes to cut the lawn at predetermined days of the week and hours of the day; rain sensors so no cutting in downpours; sensors that avoid the garden furniture; theft protection; mulching systems and back to base instructions when they need charging. There are even mowers that will text you if something goes wrong!
Choosing your lawn mower
So now you have a decision to make; how much is freedom from cutting the grass worth? At the bottom end of the scale you can pay $900 for your small garden up to $4,300 to mow your 2 acre plot. This is no lightweight investment, read several automatic lawn mower reviews to help you decide. If you do go ahead and buy an automatic lawn mower, enjoy your leisure time and be the envy of your neighbours!
