Types of lawn mower cover
If you have bought yourself an expensive lawn mower, it makes sense looking after it by buying a lawn mower cover to protect it. A lawn mower is probably one of the bulkiest pieces of garden equipment a gardener has to use, and the one used most regularly. A standard push lawn mower cover can cost as little as $8, is made from durable, mildew-resistant polyethylene and will protect your mower from wind rain and dirt. There are lawn mower covers for riding mowers, walk behind mowers and push mowers, all generally of a similar design, polyethylene with elastic bottoms that hold the cover securely over the mower. The top-end price for a riding lawn mower cover with a universal fit is around $40 and will be made of thicker material with extra waterproofing and is for the larger tractor lawn mowers.
Specialized lawn mower covers
If you have bought a rather more sophisticated and larger tractor or riding lawn mower, the standard size cover may not be suitable. Lawn mower manufacturers make accessories for their products and lawn mower covers are part of the range. An example is the John Deere lawn mower cover for their tractor and ride-on range of motors. These are made of heavy duty black vinyl, with eyelet holes at the bottom to be tied on to the lawn mower with straps. There is a limited stock as the company no longer makes either mowers or covers, so you will have to find them at lawn mower spares outlets. Toro, on the other hand, still manufacture a Toro lawn mower cover for each type of mower that they sell; three designs are available, a walk behind, a tractor and a zero turn lawn mower cover. The covers are vented so that they do not blow around in the wind, are heavy duty water resistant and repellent, and are made from tear and abrasion resistant 600-Denier polyester. They too have elastic bottoms. The branded lawn mower covers tend to be a bit more expensive than all-purpose covers, and retail at around $50 to $70 for the largest tractor covers.
Before buying a lawn mower cover
It makes sense protecting your expensive and most often used piece of garden equipment, just make sure you get the correctly fitting lawn mower cover. Measure your lawn mower, do not rely on the make and model number. As long as you know its size, you can find a lawn mower cover in polyethylene which will last a few years. Alternatively, splash out on a more expensive brand name for more heavy duty protection.
