Yard Machine Lawn tractors are a moderately priced brand of riding lawn mowers. They are manufactured by MTD Corporation and are distributed through a variety of retailers, the most common one being Wal-Mart. The following provides an overview of the brand’s basic specifications, safety features, advantages, and drawbacks.
Yard Machine riding mowers are offered in four basic models. The smallest offers a 13.5 HP engine, 6 speed transmission, and a 38” cutting deck. The largest offers a 17.5 HP engine, 7 speed transmission, and a 42” cutting deck. All models feature twin blade cutting decks, shift-on-the-go transmission, 18” turning radius, extensive safety features, and two year limited warranty.
Mulching/bagging kits are available as an optional upgrade on most models. Prices range from $900 - $1500 with some consumers reporting that they found the smaller model at end of the season sales for as low as $500.
There are a number of safety features built into Yard Machine Lawn tractors. All offer blade and engine shutoff if you leave the seat for any reason. You also cannot start the mower or back up with the blades turning. All these safety features are fine for the homeowner, especially if your teenagers are responsible for mowing duties. Lawn care professionals, however, end up bypassing many of the safety shut-offs as they deem these safety features excessive for an experienced professional.
People who have purchased Yard Machine Lawn tractors report that the machine is a good buy for a medium to large size, fairly level lot. However, it is worth noting that this is a lightweight machine made for yard cutting...period. People who have tried to used them to haul garden trailers and tow tillers find that they do not perform nearly as well as larger, heavier models. Furthermore, if you need to mow areas with lots of terrain features such as hills, ditches, etc. – this brand of riding mowers has a tendency to dip one side of the cutting deck. This results in an unevenly mowed lawn. Finally, mower repair shops indicate that, due to the high percentage of plastic parts, this mower is not as durable as more expensive, commercial grade models. Yard Machine© Lawn tractors require more maintenance per hours of mowing as compared to high end models like John Deere and Husquvarna.
In conclusion, remember that you get what you pay for. If you are looking for a riding mower that will quickly and evenly cut the grass on mostly level, medium to large sized lawns, this mower provides great value. However, if you want your lawn tractor to mow, till, clear snow, and haul supplies and debris around your property, this is not the machine for you. It simply doesn’t have the muscle to perform all those tasks. You would be better served to send the extra money for a heavy-duty, multi-purpose garden tractor.
