Organic Garden Pest Control

   (Read 50+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

Fact: Gardens, whether organic or not, are bugged by all types of pests all year round. Owners spend a lot of time looking for the most effective organic garden pest control methods to keep these insects from destroying their gardens. Now, what methods can you use that are both organic and effective? Some gardeners shared their secrets on organic garden pest control practices and mixtures than can help eradicate annoying vermin and keep your plants healthy and safe.

The easiest organic garden pest control method is drenching. Using a garden hose to drench plants with strong jets of water will kill aphids and wash thrips off your plants. Mixing water with detergents or natural vegetable based soaps and spraying them on plants can also repel insects. Do remember not to use a lot of detergent as it can be harmful to plants in certain volumes. Also, spraying on plants during summer is not a recommended organic garden pest control method as it tends to burn the leaves of plants. Spraying with mineral oil, dormant oil, vegetable oil, or summer oil is also a good way to eradicate pests. These oils are effective in suffocating soft-bodied insects like aphids, thrips, and certain insect eggs.

Organic garden pest control mixtures are also effective methods of controlling pests. Since strong smelling substances act as repellents, spraying them on plants will give it that instant protection it needs. A good mixture is the garlic fire spray. The result of a concoction of garlic bulbs, hot chili peppers, vegetable oil, and liquid detergent, this mixture should be sprayed every few days until there are no signs of pests, and then every week up to 10 days for the eggs and larvae. The uses for this organic garden pest control spray are unlimited. It kills not only mealy bugs but also grubs, ants, caterpillars, aphids, and other small bugs.

Handpicking is another organic garden pest control method that can effectively reduce the number of pests in your garden especially for larger species like caterpillars. Also, using insect traps like sticky papers can help minimize flying insects in your greenhouse.

Biological pest control methods are also prominent among gardeners. Whether using predatory insects or integrating pest-repelling plants like rhubarb, this organic garden pest control method can be done anytime. Pest-repelling plants emit odors or have volatile oils which are unpleasant for some bugs. Predatory insects, on the other hand, regulate the increase of harmful insects by preying on them.

These organic garden pest control methods are most effective when done in diversity. These are not really new to the ears of gardeners. They have been reiterated time and again for the simple reason that they are effective and environmentally sustainable. Knowing these organic garden pest control methods will surely save any gardener a few hundred dollars and a lot of headaches.
